- Co-recipient of the Meehan-Miller Award (1979), presented to outstanding Chief Residents of the year — in recognition of research on the early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy. The resulting paper, "The discriminatory hCG zone," has been cited over 300 times. Following this work, the rate of ruptured ectopic pregnancy at Yale dropped from 90% to 10%.
1979 — 1981
- Fellowship, Maternal-Fetal Medicine — Yale University School of Medicine
- Under the leadership of Dr. John Hobbins, a previous recipient of the Ian Donald Gold Medal Award and a pioneer of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology in the USA.
- Began collaboration with the late Charlie Kleinman, another Ian Donald Gold Medal recipient, on fetal echocardiography.
- Received a research grant from the Thrasher Research Fund, with which he acquired the equipment used in his groundbreaking work in fetal echocardiography.
From training to career
After completing his fellowship, Dr. DeVore joined the faculty at the University of Southern California School of Medicine as an associate professor — working for several years with Lawrence Platt, another Ian Donald Gold Medal recipient who introduced the biophysical profile to clinical practice. He later worked at the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), before becoming a full-time consultant to obstetricians caring for patients with suspected fetal anomalies and growth disorders.
For many years, he also served as a clinical professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where he helped train the next generation of physicians in fetal echocardiography.
